CONSENT FORM BREAKDOWN

i. Tattoos are considered permanent and can only be removed with a surgical or laser procedure, which may result in scarring:

Tattoos are created by injecting ink into the dermis layer of the skin using a needle. Due to the depth at which the ink is deposited, tattoos are generally considered permanent. Removing a tattoo typically requires either surgical excision, where the tattooed skin is cut out and the surrounding skin stitched together, or laser treatment, which breaks down the ink particles in the skin so the body can absorb them. Both methods carry the risk of scarring, which may vary depending on factors such as the size and location of the tattoo, as well as individual skin characteristics.

ii. Explanation of the healing process, including expected duration, possible side effects, abnormalities, and any restrictions or limitations:

The healing process of a tattoo can vary depending on factors such as the size and complexity of the design, the skill of the artist, and individual skin characteristics. Generally, the initial healing period lasts around 2-3 weeks, during which the tattooed area may experience redness, swelling, and minor discomfort. Complete healing may take up to 8 weeks. It is normal for the tattoo to scab and peel during the initial 2-3 weeks. However, complications such as infection, excessive scabbing, or allergic reactions can occur. Allergic reactions can occur months or even years after receiving the tattoo. Though these reactions are typically not life-threatening, complications such as redness and itchiness (hives) can occur as an immune response to the ink breaking down as being recognized as a foreign body. Rarely a trip to the doctor is in order unless this later reaction is prolonged, severe, or worsens. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about the healing process, or even if complications arise in the future regarding your tattoo.

Clients should be informed about these potential side effects and instructed on how to care for their tattoo to minimize risks. They should also be aware of any restrictions or limitations during the healing process, such as avoiding exposure to sunlight, swimming, or certain activities that could irritate the tattooed area. These limitations will be discussed in the next section below.

iii. I have been provided with both written and verbal aftercare instructions:

Proper aftercare is crucial for ensuring the best possible outcome for a tattoo. Clients should be provided with clear and comprehensive aftercare instructions, both verbally and in writing, to guide them through the healing process. These instructions typically include guidelines for cleaning and moisturizing the tattoo, avoiding activities that could damage the healing skin, and recognizing signs of infection or other complications. Providing both written and verbal instructions ensures that clients have access to the information they need to properly care for their tattoo once they leave the studio. It's important for clients to follow these instructions carefully to promote optimal healing and minimize the risk of complications.

Tattoo Aftercare Instructions (provided as verbal instruction and written given in a packet to the client after the procedure, as well as sent via email prior to appointment with a link to the aftercare instructions on paleartist.com)

1. Keep the Tattoo Clean:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before touching/cleaning your new tattoo.

  • Gently wash your tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap (such as Gold Dial) and lukewarm water using your clean hands. Avoid using anything like abrasive sponges or washcloths.

  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of soap and pat dry with a clean, soft towel or clean paper towel. Do not rub the tattoo with your towel.

  • Clean your tattoo 2-3 times a day, especially if it comes into contact with dirt, sweat, or other contaminants.

2. Apply an Aftercare Product:

  • After cleaning, apply a thin layer of a recommended aftercare product (such as aquaphor or A&D) to the tattooed area for the first 3 days.

  • Avoid over-applying the product; a small amount is sufficient to keep the tattoo moisturized.

  • Once your tattoo begins to peel, you can switch to an unscented moisturizer (such as Cetaphil body lotion).

3. Avoid Excessive Moisture:

  • While it's important to keep your tattoo moisturized, avoid soaking it in water for prolonged periods. This includes swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, and prolonged hot showers.

  • Limit exposure to direct sunlight and tanning beds during the healing process. If going outside, protect your tattoo with loose clothing or a sunblock with a high SPF.

4. Avoid Scratching or Picking:

  • Do not scratch, pick, or peel any scabs or flakes that form on the tattooed area. Let them naturally slough off during the healing process to prevent scarring and color loss.

  • If itching occurs, gently pat or tap the area instead of scratching.

5. Wear Clean Clothing and have Clean Bedding:

  • Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing over the tattooed area to prevent friction and irritation.

  • Avoid wearing tight clothing that may rub against the tattoo and disrupt the healing process.

  • Make sure to have clean bedding for the first few days of your new tattoo, especially if you have pets that sleep with you, or wear clothing that protects your tattoo against your bedding. Pets can harbor bacteria that lead to infection.

6. Avoid Excessive Physical Activity:

  • Refrain from activities that may cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattooed area, such as vigorous exercise or heavy lifting.

  • Avoid contact sports or activities that could potentially injure the healing tattoo.

7. Monitor for Signs of Infection:

  • Keep an eye out for signs of infection, including excessive redness that spreads far beyond the tattoo, swelling, warmth, or oozing pus from the tattooed area.

  • If you suspect an infection, contact your tattoo artist or seek medical attention promptly.

8. Follow-Up Care:

  • Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your tattoo artist for assessment and touch-ups, if necessary.

  • Continue to follow these aftercare instructions until your tattoo is fully healed, which typically takes 2-4 weeks, depending on the size and location of the tattoo.

9. Consultation:

  • If you have any concerns or questions about your tattoo's healing process, don't hesitate to contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional for guidance and assistance.
